Sir John Franklin High School appoints new principal

Dean MacInnis will be the new principal of Yellowknife’s École Sir John Franklin High School.

MacInnis, assistant principal at the school since 2011, takes over from Ed Lippert. The YK1 school district had earlier announced Lippert would become its new assistant superintendent.

“I am eager to continue my professional journey with Sir John Franklin staff and students in this capacity,” said MacInnis, a Yellowknifer since 1992, in a statement announcing his appointment on Monday.

“Through our combined efforts we can ensure that the school remains successful, safe and welcoming.”

MacInnis, a physical education and classroom teacher, was also an administrator at William McDonald Middle School from 2003 to 2007 and at Range Lake North School from 2007 to 2010.

More recently, he helped to develop the pilot of Sir John Franklin’s sports school program, which is set to begin this fall.

With high lead at 31 of 38 NWT schools, more public site tests to be “determined”

Testing results show another school in the territory with elevated levels of lead in water. Since comprehensive testing of schools across the N.W.T. began this fall, 31 school sites out of 38 announced to date have tested positive for elevated levels of lead. Two officials from the department of Infrastructure said the N.W.T. plans to look at testing more public buildings including health care centres and hospitals once school testing is completed.
