YK Canada Day Celebrations to be held virtually

The City of Yellowknife and the NWT’s own Leela Gilday will be joining five cities across Canada for the National Broadcast ‘Canada Day Across the Country.’ This Heritage Canada, televised and live-streamed event, supported by the Government of Canada, will air on CBC Radio Canada and various online platforms beginning at 11:00 a.m. on July 1st.

In just three short weeks, Leela Gilday wrote, rehearsed and recorded a special song with a local, northern band consisting of Al Bee, Pat Braden, Wesley Hardisty, and Lawrence Nayally, and a production team that included the Artless Collective and PIDO productions. A music video was shot on top of Pilots Monument earlier this month.

Mayor Rebecca Alty noted that the City is looking forward to celebrating together while enjoying and showcasing some of Yellowknife’s incredible artists.

“As the video was shot on a gorgeous northern day, the rest of Canada will get to see our beautiful landscape too!”

Other local artists will also perform to the nation during an interactive live-streamed “Zoom Concert’ on July 1st. These online shows will allow audience members to join the artists and dance and clap along to their performances. Concert attendees can choose to share their camera or simply watch. Question and answer sessions with the artists will occur after the performances.

Submissions are still open to contribute to two collaborative videos, including a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the national anthem, and a compilation of Canada Day Shout-outs.

Mayor Alty states that Canada Day is a celebration that brings our community together.

“This year is no different and, although we will be physically distant, Yellowknifers will still be able to celebrate together, virtually.”

The Rotary Club of Yellowknife’s celebrations titled ‘Celebrate Canada Day @ Home” encourages residents to decorate themselves and their homes in red and white. Residents who participate will have an opportunity to win prizes and can enter by taking a picture of their red and white decorations and posting it on the Rotary Club of Yellowknife’s event page on Facebook.
