Yk1: no movement from G.N.W.T to fund JK across territory

Yellowknife, NWT – The chair of Yk1, the Yellowknife Public School Board, says there is no movement from the territorial government on funding junior kindergarten across the Northwest Territories.

John Stephenson was part of a group of school board representatives that met with Education Minister Jackson Lafferty last week.

He says he again stressed that implementing a JK program in Yellowknife without extra funding for it will cause a financial hardship for his board.

Stephenson says Lafferty confirmed that the plan, introduced in the budget earlier this year, has already had to be modified.

“He heard the concerns from small communities, and the regions representing the small communities, that they might not be ready for that this fall and so he’s allowing each of the school boards with small communities to have the option of introducing it this year or not.”

Stephenson says junior kindergarten is still expected to be introduced in Yellowknife in the fall of 2016.

He says the minister seemed to be sympathetic towards Yk1’s financial constraints, but made no commitments towards any funding help.
