PM says he will push for 10 paid sick days for all workers

Justin Trudeau says no worker in Canada should have to choose between taking a sick day or getting a paycheque.

In his daily briefing, the Prime Minister says he will continue to discuss with the provinces and territories providing 10 paid sick leave days a year for every worker in Canada.  Trudeau says the issue was brought up by B.C. Premier John Horgan a few weeks ago on a First Minister’s call. Horgan said that when flu season begins in the fall it would be important for people who feel ill to be able to take time to go get tested and stay home instead of feeling the pressure to go to work when they are sick.  Trudeau says a number of Premiers agree and the discussion will continue however he says they mechanism to deliver it is “not obvious”.  The 10 paid sick leave days is a key demand of the NDP in order to guarantee support from the party to limit sittings in the House of Commons.  That plan will be voted on today.

Trudeau also encouraged landlords to apply for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program starting today.  Landlords that have up to ten eligible tenants in Atlantic Canada, B.C., Alberta, and Quebec can apply today.  Landlords in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Territories can apply tomorrow.  Landlords with more than ten tenants will be able to apply later this week.  This program will cover up to 75-percent of rent for businesses.

Crews fighting fires in Dehcho amid extreme conditions and poor visibility

In the Dehcho region, Wildland crews reported that while some areas remain problematic, direct attack methods on FS016, south of Liidlii Kue and Fort Simpson were effective on Tuesday. In Wrigley, response efforts were overwhelmed by conditions and poor visibility.  In the South Slave region, a wildfire located about 20 km from Hay River has been 90 per cent contained following nearly two weeks of active response.

Intersections across city to see signal and hardware makeovers in next 3 weeks

City of Yellowknife
A series of traffic signal maintenance and hardware upgrades are set to begin Thursday at intersections throughout the city of Yellowknife. The work is scheduled to continue until July 31. City staff said during the three week period, temporary traffic signal interruptions can be anticipated.

While about 7,800 organizations across the country have a similar accreditation, about 55 organizations in the territory currently hold this type of accreditation. The AVENS Community for Seniors in Yellowknife received accreditation under the Qmentum Long Term Care program.

Liidlii Kue First Nation and Fort Simpson Community officials say FS015 has active in and around all subdivisions, as well as on the hills below Wildrose and near the trailer court. Another structure protection task force arrived in the community on Monday. Wildland Urban Interface crews and wildland firefighters are focussing their response on residential areas near Wildrose to extinguish active fire wildfire burning east of Hwy 1.
