YK mayor: bike lanes coming this year, exact date unknown

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknife’s mayor says he’d like to see bike lanes on downtown streets by the summer, but admits that may be unrealistic.

Mark Heyck says there is a lot of other road work to address first.

Last week, city councillors awarded the 2014 paving contract to Yellowknife-based N.W.T Construction, the only company that bid on the job.

We asked Heyck when he expects paving and bike lane projects to get underway.

“The Public Works Department needs to sit down with the contractor to work out all the scheduling. There are several streets due for paving this year and a lot of water and sewer work that has to take place so we should know in the next couple of weeks what the approximate schedule is for the summer. Part of that will also include coming up with traffic plans to ensure that people are still able to get around the city without too much inconvenience.”

Some councillors were weary of including 52nd Avenue into the paving program because it was some $700,000 over budget.

Heyck says he wants to see it done though, so that the city can proceed with raised bike lanes on that route.

The city will also move forward with painted lanes on other downtown streets.
