Camping season open in most of the territory

Yellowknife, NWT – Camping season is officially open in the Northwest Territories and just in time for the long weekend.

The G.N.W.T’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment says parks are open across the N.W.T except for the Beaufort Delta Regions where parks open Jun. 1.

Parks Operations Manager Benji Straker is with I.T.I.

He says campers should notice several upgrades, including Fred Henne Park in Yellowknife.

“Late last year we were completing a couple projects that will be ready to go this summer, including a brand new kitchen shelter that people can rent right on the beach for parties. At Prelude people will notice we’ve done a huge expansion at the parking lot there. It can get congested with boat traffic so that’s a big improvement.”

Straker says a new online booking system should make campsite reservations easier than ever.

He says over 1,000 sites were booked on the first day alone.
