Registration is open for 2020 Dead North Film Festival

 Registration is now open for teams to sign up for the 2020 Dead North Film Festival, the world’s only circumpolar genre film challenge and festival open to all filmmakers living North of 60.

The eighth annual festival will take place from February 27 to March 1, 2020, at the Capitol Theatre in Yellowknife, NWT. Participants will once again be asked to come up with their best original short horror, science fiction, thriller or fantasy films for the festival that has now seen over 170 films created since its inception.

“In 2020, we are doubling down on our Northern genre filmmakers in the hopes of creating an unstoppable army of high-level projects that can be unleashed into the national and international genre market,” Dead North President Jay Bulckaert said. “We want to see Northern filmmakers getting their films accepted to as many genre film festivals as possible in Canada and beyond in 2020. We also want those projects to get accepted into shorts-to-features and industry pitch sessions so that a few years from now, several Dead North shorts are going into feature film production.”

This year, Dead North participants will be treated to a two-day HyperBorea Talent Lab filmmaking boot camp as part of the 2020 festival. The lab will assist anyone with a Dead North film to whip their project and pitch into shape for festivals and possible development into a feature film.

“From start to finish, our goal is to help our filmmakers walk away with the best film package possible to launch them into the genre stratosphere,”  Bulckaert said. “And it will be free for Dead North alumni.”

The town of Hay River has once again been named a finalist in the 2026 Community Challenge.Just last year, Hay River not only picked up the title of the most active community in N.W.T. but also nabbed $15,000 in prize funding support for local physical activity and sport initiatives. And in 2024, Hay River won the top prize in the national challenge, picking up $100,000 in prize funding.

Crews fighting fires in Dehcho amid extreme conditions and poor visibility

In the Dehcho region, Wildland crews reported that while some areas remain problematic, direct attack methods on FS016, south of Liidlii Kue and Fort Simpson were effective on Tuesday. In Wrigley, response efforts were overwhelmed by conditions and poor visibility.  In the South Slave region, a wildfire located about 20 km from Hay River has been 90 per cent contained following nearly two weeks of active response.

Intersections across city to see signal and hardware makeovers in next 3 weeks

A series of traffic signal maintenance and hardware upgrades are set to begin Thursday at intersections throughout the city of Yellowknife. The work is scheduled to continue until July 31. City staff said during the three week period, temporary traffic signal interruptions can be anticipated.
