9-1-1 service is now available in all 33 communities in the Northwest Territories.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce that 9-1-1 service is now available in all 33 communities in the Northwest Territories.

9-1-1 service in the Northwest Territories will make it faster for residents to contact emergency services that exist in their community. It will save lives and make the North safer and more resilient. A lot of work and consultation has gone into launching this service since the passing of the legislation in March.

When residents need to call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency, a professional emergency dispatcher with specialized training to deal with crises will answer the call. Residents should be prepared to give their location and briefly explain the nature of their emergency.

The GNWT wishes to remind residents that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only. Residents should dial 9-1-1 only if you are in need of police, fire or emergency medical assistance. If you aren’t sure if your situation is an emergency, you should err on the side of safety and call 9-1-1.

Please do not test call 9-1-1 unless you have an actual emergency. Emergency dispatchers need to attend to calls that are for actual emergencies.
