YK house fire responsible for estimated $700,000 damage

Yellowknife, NWT – An update now on a major house fire in Yellowknife.

Fire crews were called at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon to 4401 School Draw at 44th Street.

Firefighters arrived to find the two-storey home fully engulfed in flames with heavy black smoke pouring out.

They responded immediately with a pumper-aerial unit and called in extra firefighters.

Yellowknife Fire Chief Darcy Hernblad says it appears to have started on the back deck.

He says a woman and a cat were home at the time but both escaped without injuries.

Hernblad says one firefighter did receive minor burns and was treated on scene.

He says the fire badly damaged the home and destroyed a camper trailer and a boat.

“I was at the house Thursday morning and we do the best educated guess that we can but the house to me is a total write-off so we’re probably looking at $500,000 for the house and a couple hundred thousand dollars for the contents but that’s just an estimate at this point in time.”

Hernblad says there’s nothing to suggest at this point that the fire was deliberately set.

He says they’re working with the Fire Marshall to try to determine a cause.
