Talks break down in Hay River, union says town’s offer ‘measly’

The latest round of talks to end the Hay River strike has broken down.

The Union of Northern Workers (UNW) says the two-day negotiations came to a premature conclusion late on Monday morning.

In a statement, the union said the Town of Hay River “failed to propose a reasonable offer” to more than 30 town staff, who have been out on strike since early February in a dispute over salary increases.

“Our members … absolutely refuse to accept the town’s measly offers, when everyone knows a full settlement comes at no cost to town coffers,” said Todd Parsons, the UNW president, in that statement.
