Conservation officers investigating after discovering dead black bear wearing dog leash outside Yellowknife

A peculiar discovery over the weekend has Environment and Natural Resource (ENR) officers asking the public for assistance.

On October 18, at approximately 1:00 p.m., ENR wildlife officers were alerted to a dead bear in the ditch off Highway 3 about 12 km outside of Yellowknife.

According to ENR, upon arriving at the location, officers found a dead bear that had been heavily scavenged by birds and other wildlife. The bear was wrapped in a tan-coloured canvas tarp with a red dog leash around its neck.

ENR is seeking the public’s assistance to locate the person or people responsible. Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to waste, destroy or abandon a wild animal such as a black bear.

If you have any knowledge of this incident or related information, please contact the ENR North Slave Regional Office at 1-867-767-9238 ext. 53258, or call our toll-free number (available 24 hours a day) at 1-866-762-2437.
