RCMP update on search for four missing fishermen

The Hay River RCMP organized another air search of the area where the four fishermen went missing on September 29, 2019.

On Friday, October 11, the Hay River RCMP worked with their partner agency, Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), and deployed an aircraft to further search the area where it is believed the fishermen went missing.

CASARA searched the southern and western shoreline of Great Slave Lake. There were no reported sightings of the missing fishermen.

Community volunteers have been rallying to organize ground searches. On Friday, October 11, members of the missing fishermen’s families hired a helicopter to search the southern shore, but search results were negative.

“We want to remind the community to use extreme caution and plan ahead if going on the land or water as we are facing colder conditions, including snow,” Sgt Brandon Humbke, Detachment Commander for Hay River RCMP said. “We understand the need for friends and families to look for closure and bring home their loved ones, however, we urge caution. We are very sorry for their loss.”

The RCMP has stayed in communication with the families of the missing persons and will continue to support them.

While further searching is not planned at this time, the missing fishermen file remains active.

Should evidence regarding the possible location of the missing fishermen be brought forward, the search may be resumed. The RCMP encourages anyone with any information, to please contact Hay River RCMP.
