Victim of aggravated assault in downtown Yellowknife dies from injuries

RCMP advise the 36-year-old victim of an aggravated assault at the Sobering Centre and Day Centre in downtown Yellowknife on Tuesday, September 3, has passed away in hospital.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Poodlat, and also with our entire community as we grieve the tragic loss of a community member ” states Insp. Alex Laporte, Officer in Charge of Yellowknife Detachment.

At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, Yellowknife RCMP received a call for service at the Sobering Centre regarding an injured man.

The City of Yellowknife Fire Division Emergency Medical Services attended and transported the victim to the hospital. The victim was then transferred by Medevac to Edmonton.

“In consultation with the family, we are saddened to inform of the death of Mark Poodlat, 36-year-old, this morning in Edmonton, AB,” the RCMP said.

Victor Ugyuk, 32-year-old of Yellowknife, has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault Sec. 268 cc. and two counts of Breach of Probation Sec. 733.1 cc.

RCMP are now working with the NT Coroner Service. An autopsy has been ordered and the investigation is ongoing. The NT RCMP Major Crime Unit is now leading this homicide investigation.
