An agreement has been signed by the NWT Housing Corporation with the RCMP to construct and provide property management for 45 new market rental units in the territory.
A release from the GNWT states that the RCMP play a critical role in the north, as they are the main law enforcement body for all our communities.
“The provision of stable housing for RCMP employees addresses their affordable housing requirements and supports service delivery to NWT residents.”
Alfred Moses, Minister Responsible for the NWTHC, confirms that the construction of the 45 units across the territory will result in increased employment for northerners.
These units will be located in Fort Smith (6 units), Norman Wells (3), Inuvik (17), Fort Simpson (7), and Hay River (12).
Moses adds that this agreement will result in housing for the RCMP, jobs for northerners and a new revenue stream for the government that will help in sustaining affordable housing in the NWT.
“Our goal at the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation is to implement northern solutions for northern housing. Further, this revenue stream will assist us in meeting the financial challenges from declining Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation funding for public housing.”
Chief Superintendent Jamie Zettler, Commanding Officer, NWT says the RCMP is pleased with the GNWT support, partnership and their commitment to providing housing, thus allowing officers to provide policing services and contribute to safe communities in the territory.
“Our members and their families reside in the communities, thus becoming part of the communities we police. They live there, their children attend school there, they become engaged and support community activities.”
