Preliminary hearing for YK murder suspect to begin next week

Yellowknife, NWT – Two high profile cases were dealt with briefly at Territorial Court in Yellowknife Tuesday morning.

28-year-old David Harrison of Yellowknife, charged with first degree murder in the death of Yvonne Desjarlais, did not appear in person.

His preliminary hearing begins May 22.

It will determine if there’s enough evidence to send the case to trial.

The judge granted the Crown’s request for two RCMP officers, both with the homicide division, to testify via video from their home base in Surrey, BC next week.

The 63-year-old victim, originally from the East Arm community of Lutsel K’e, died in hospital after she was found in a downtown Yellowknife alley in late 2012.

Police have never released a cause of death.

Meanwhile, Yellowknife RCMP Constable Nathan White wasn’t in court either as his case was put over until Jun. 24.

He’s facing fraud charges for allegedly fudging his overtime.

White remains suspended with pay.
