NWT receives over $1.5 million in federal funding for tourism projects

NWT MP Michael McLeod, joined by Hay River Mayor Kandis Jameson, announced the funding of $1,531,800 to support six tourism projects in the territory.

This investment is being made through the Canadian Experiences Fund, which supports Canadian businesses and organizations seeking to create, improve or enhance tourism products, facilities and experiences.

McLeod stated that these spectacular investments will help our communities attract more visitors, while also enhancing economic diversification in the territory.

“In the NWT, we know the tremendous potential for growth in our tourism sector.”

The six tourism projects that were announced were:

  • $475,000 to the Town of Inuvik for their Joe Koe Tourism Project,
  • $390,800 to Ne’rahten Developments Limited for their Fort Good Hope Hotel project,
  • $300,000 to the Hamlet of Fort McPherson for their campground project,
  • $280,000 to Tourism Tulita Incorporated for biomass-heated chalets,
  • $76,000 to the Town of Hay River for tourism enhancements and destination marketing strategy,
  • $10,000 to Pehdzeh Ki First Nation for their Visitor Information Centre project.

Jameson noted that tourist travel has grown substantially in the Hay River area and the region is expected to see further increases as the NWT is recognized as a national and international tourism destination.

“Developing market-ready tourism products that showcase Hay River’s great culture, natural beauty, and rich history, and enhancing our destination marketing and promotional activities, will have profound impacts on the economic strength of our community.”

According to the government, tourism supports more than 1.8 million jobs in Canada and represents more than 2% of the country’s gross domestic product.
