Yellowknife-Dettah ice road closes for the season

The Dettah ice road has closed for the season.

In a tweet on Sunday, the territorial Department of Transportation said the road was no longer open “due to conditions”.

No further travel is now permitted on the road linking Yellowknife and Dettah across the frozen Great Slave Lake.

This year’s closure comes nine days earlier than last year’s announcement. The road opened on December 19.

Separately, the department also says the Tłı̀¨chǫ winter road system will close within the next two days.

Warm weather is causing portages to deteriorate rapidly, and roads in that system are currently open for night travel only.
