A pilot project providing expanded access to the Healing Camp counsellors and services has been launched by the City of Yellowknife, in partnership with the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation.
The pilot program will begin on Monday, August 5th, and will run for at least four months in which there will be a member of the Healing Camp in the downtown core speaking with people who may be experiencing homelessness. There will also be someone welcoming individuals to the Healing Camp at 7 a.m. when they arrive.
The idea to expand opportunities for individuals to access Healing Camp services was proposed by Executive Director of the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation, Donald Prince to help break the cycle of addictions while encouraging change among individuals.
“We are continually looking at how we can help people and we need to make efforts to meet people where they are at.”
According to Mayor Rebecca Alty, the City feels the pilot project is great because it’s an opportunity for individuals experiencing homelessness to participate in cultural activities, sharing circles and, if so inclined, to speak with an Elder or access traditional counselling.
The extension of hours and services will be offered until the end of November.
