High Performance Athlete Grants now open for applications

For those top NWT athletes who might need a little more financial help along the way, now’s your chance to get it. Applications for the 2019-2020 High-Performance Athlete Grant are now being called for by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs and Sport North Federation.

The High-Performance Athlete Grant Program provides funding for high-performance athletes from the NWT to assist with the costs associated with training and competing in their chosen sport. To apply you must:

  • Be a member in good standing with a National Sport Organization or Territorial Sport Organization;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant;
  • Be an NWT resident;
  • Not be employed on a full-time basis (over 20 hours per week); and
  • Not be receiving remuneration from any professional sports league or team.
  • Remain at a southern training location for the duration of the sporting season.

The funding level for each recipient is based on athletic achievement and recognition at the national or international level. Athletes may be eligible to receive support under one of the three categories:

1. Gold Level Assistance (up to $20,000)

  • The athlete is a member of a National Team or a Junior National Team and is representing Canada on an international basis.
  • The athlete may be a carded athlete.
  • The application must include a letter of endorsement from an NSO and the athlete’s coach.
  • The athlete must provide evidence of a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding.

2. Silver Level Assistance (up to $10,000)

  • The athlete is a member of a National Team or Junior National Team developmental program.
  • The athlete may be a developmental carded athlete.
  • The athlete must include a letter of endorsement from an NSO and their coach.
  • The athlete must demonstrate a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding.

3. Bronze Level Assistance (up to $5,000)

  • The athlete is a recognized member of any CIS, CCAA, or NCAA sanctioned team.
  • The athlete is a recognized member of any other nationally sanctioned amateur sports league.
  • The athlete must have a letter of endorsement from their coach.
  • The athlete must demonstrate a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding.

The Sport North Federation and MACA jointly approve all recipients. The deadline for 2019-2020 applications is October 18th. To apply for the grant click here.

Aklavik Access Road closes April 30, one day earlier than anticipated

The N.W.T. Department of Infrastructure has closed the Aklavik Access Road as the winter road season comes to a close. On Wednesday, the department issued a 72-hour closure caution but warned that the road “may close sooner with little to no notice.”
