Reported crime in Canada increases for the fourth straight year; Iran claims they caught spies and will sentence some to death

Crime severity up in most provinces but still overall lower than 10 years ago

Reported crime in Canada continues to increase. The CBC cited data from Stats Canada which shows this is the fourth straight year the numbers have gone up. It is being boosted by fraud which includes online and telephone scams. Alberta and British Columbia were stable while only the Yukon, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia saw decreases.

SNC Lavalin expected significant losses

SNC Lavalin Group is expecting big losses outside of the scandal. The Canadian Press reported that the organization is looking at a significantly lower 2019 than anticipated. The engineering giant is reorganizing to cut ties with its poorer performing segments. It also got hit with almost $2 billion in impairments charges to its oil and gas division.

Trump says Iran’s claim the country caught CIA spies is a lie

Iran officials said they caught 17 spies and have sentenced some to death. The Associated Press says they were Iranian Nationalists recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to keep tabs on the country’s nuclear program. It wasn’t reported how many were sentenced to death. The U.S. President Donald Trump said the claim is a lie.

Crews fighting fires in Dehcho amid extreme conditions and poor visibility

In the Dehcho region, Wildland crews reported that while some areas remain problematic, direct attack methods on FS016, south of Liidlii Kue and Fort Simpson were effective on Tuesday. In Wrigley, response efforts were overwhelmed by conditions and poor visibility.  In the South Slave region, a wildfire located about 20 km from Hay River has been 90 per cent contained following nearly two weeks of active response.

Intersections across city to see signal and hardware makeovers in next 3 weeks

City of Yellowknife
A series of traffic signal maintenance and hardware upgrades are set to begin Thursday at intersections throughout the city of Yellowknife. The work is scheduled to continue until July 31. City staff said during the three week period, temporary traffic signal interruptions can be anticipated.

Older Adult “Campus of Care” model in Yellowknife getting more recognition

AVENS in Yellowknife has recently received a special accreditation for meeting a bar of care set by an independent national committee. While about 7,800 organizations across the country have a similar accreditation, about 55 organizations in the territory currently hold this type of accreditation. The AVENS Community for Seniors in Yellowknife received accreditation under the Qmentum Long Term Care program.
