Stranded snowmobilers rescued north of Inuvik

Yellowknife, NWT – Two men are safe after their snowmobiles went through the ice north of Inuvik.

RCMP say it happened last Friday morning.

They say the men, aged 57 and 37, were stranded about 130 kilometres north of Inuvik but were able to send a satellite message to one of their spouses.

Inuvik RCMP, along with the Search and Rescue Coordinator’s Office in Hay River, were able to establish their coordinates.

Police say a helicopter located the two men and returned them to Inuvik in good condition.

The Mounties are warning people that it’s no longer safe to snowmobile in most of the NWT.
