Wildfire no longer considered threat to northern Alberta town

High Level residents may be able to go back to their homes this week. The community was forced to evacuate as a wildfire was getting close to the town. There have been no reported deaths or injuries due to the blaze that has grown to 127,000 hectares. The fire is still considered dangerous but no longer a threat to the northern Alberta town.

Edmonton makes colorectal cancer breakthrough 

Alberta’s capital has developed a less invasive way to test for colorectal cancer. CTV reports it is called PolypDx and is a urine test that can detect the disease early and allow doctors to remove the polyps before they turn into cancer. The test is still in the assessment phase but is expected to be rolled out in five regions across the province.

Philpott and Wilson-Raybould turn down Green Party leadership

Federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May said she’s disappointed that neither Jody Wilson-Raybould or Jane Philpott decided to join her party. May was even offering leadership, a position she’s held for over a decade. May says she believes they made a mistake by turning down the opportunity. Both will run independently in October.

Malaysia to send back tonnes of waste to countries

Canada is one of the countries getting 3,000 metric tonnes of non-recyclable plastic waste sent back from Malaysia. The South Asian country wants to avoid becoming a “dumping ground” for rich nations, according to their environment minister. The U.S., United Kingdom and Australia will also be getting trash sent back.
