Three wildfires started by people in South Slave

There have been three fires reported in the South Slave region in the last 48 hours: one at Pine Point and two outside of Fort Smith at the landfill and in the Fox Holes area. All three fires were said to be caused by people.

Environment and Natural Resources crews assisted in responding to the landfill fire outside of Fort Smith. The tanker group responded to the Fox Holes fire Sunday evening and one fire crew is currently actioning the fire, which is now being held. The Pine Point fire was an escaped campfire and has been called out.

ENR is reminding residents that the Fire Danger Level throughout the South Slave and Dehcho is high or extreme.

The GNWT is advising residents to use extreme caution with campfires, especially if they are necessary for cooking or keeping warm and that burn permits are required for any fire other than cooking or warmth.

“Do not leave any fire unattended, even if you are camping in a Territorial Park. Make sure your fire is completely out before you leave it. Soak the ashes, stir them and soak them again. Do not let carelessness be the cause of a wildland fire.”
