Search and rescue operation still underway for overdue travellers

A search and rescue initiated by the Yellowknife RCMP to locate three overdue travellers who were en route to Lutsel’ke is still ongoing. RCMP received a report on the night of May 14th about three overdue travellers, two men and one woman leaving Dettah at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13th following a route to Lutsel’ke.

The missing travellers are Samuel Boucher, 65, Cammy Boucher, 23 and an unknown man in their company. They were aboard a 1990’s era Black Bombardier Scandic two-seater, towing two toboggans. The travellers had equipment appropriate for travelling on the land and at least one person was believed to be an experienced traveller on the land.

Air search resources have been deployed as an air search over a portion of Great Slave Lake, was completed May 14th. The air search resources were back in the air on May 15th, with no sightings recorded.

RCMP advise the public to refrain from individual search attempts due to deteriorating ice conditions as the reported ice conditions are too treacherous for ground search resources to deploy.

“At this time, RCMP have a coordinated search effort underway. We do not want community volunteers to put themselves at risk, despite their good intentions to assist” states Staff Sergeant Yannick Hamel, Yellowknife RCMP Operations Manager.

Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
