The first patient day for the hospital is May 26th. The GNWT has partnered with Health Care Relocations to facilitate the move, which health minister Glen Abernethy says will happen all in one day.

The new hospital is 27,500 square metres, double the existing hospital’s size. It will have Wi-Fi, free parking for patients and visitors and individual enclosed rooms for patients.

The original hospital building will now be worked on to remove hazardous materials, which will eventually house extended care and other services. “The vision for the building is for it to exist as part of a ‘Campus of Care,'” according to stantonrenewal.ca. “The GNWT has committed to housing 72 long-term care beds, 18 extended care beds, outpatient rehabilitation services and the Frame Lake Clinic into the renovated legacy building.”

The new hospital, under construction since October 2015, is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the GNWT in the territory’s history. The total capital cost is $350 million, which will be paid to the Boreal Health Partnership in installments of $18-million per year over 30 years. So far, over $71-million has been invested by the territory into the project according to stantonrenewal.ca.
