Video of arrest in Yellowknife prompts external review

An external investigation has been ordered after Yellowknife RCMP obtained a video that purports to show one of its members hitting a restrained man.

The video, which was provided to RCMP by CBC North, was shot by a member of the public last Friday outside the Shell gas station on Range Lake Road.

Police say managing officers have viewed the arrest video and have ordered an external investigation of the incident.

The investigation will be conducted by the Lethbridge Regional Police Service, who has an agreement with NWT RCMP to conduct independent investigations into serious and sensitive matters involving the conduct of members here.

Two investigators will look into the case and say they’d like to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed the incident.

If you were present at the time of the arrest, you’re asked to call Lethbridge Regional Police at (403) 308-3808.

Meanwhile, the officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duty for the duration of internal and external investigations.
