Hay River air quality warning continues

While crews make headway on a landfill fire burning since March 3rd, smoke from the fire may still cause poor air quality in the town of Hay River.

Environment Canada warns poor air quality and reduced visibility may occur in areas downwind of the fire. Until afternoon southerly winds might cause the smoke to impact Hay River, then winds shift to westerly this afternoon.

People who are most vulnerable – including seniors, children and people with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and any cardiovascular or lung disease – should spend less time outdoors and keep their windows and doors closed.

In an update Friday, the Town of Hay River stated the crews now have a constant source of water to fight the landfill blaze. Monitoring of ground water and air quality are ongoing, the city stated.
