‘Nothing criminal’ over prisoner injury in YK RCMP cell

Investigators say there was “nothing criminal” involved in the serious injury of a female prisoner inside a Yellowknife RCMP cell.

On March 28, RCMP confirmed an injured prisoner had been taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital by emergency services two days earlier.

The statement said the prisoner had been “alone in a secure cell” at the time of the injury, adding that RCMP had ordered an external review.

The first stage of that review – carried out by Medicine Hat police – has now been completed.

Two investigators from Medicine Hat say they found “nothing criminal in nature with regards to how [the prisoner’s] injury occurred or the conduct of the RCMP members”.

However, the review continues.

Investigators will spend a further month trying to establish whether “all RCMP policies and procedures, with regards to the holding facility, were followed by its members and employees”.

Those policies and procedures would ordinarily be expected to keep prisoners safe from harm.
