Union to hold Yellowknife strike training

The Union of Northern Workers has scheduled strike training for Wednesday, February 27th in Yellowknife.

The training, posted on the UNW’s website, comes as the territorial government and the Union of Northern Workers await binding recommendations from mediator Vince Ready.

After mediations on February 8th and 9th failed to produce a tentative agreement, both sides agreed to have Ready look at outstanding issues – including economic increases, job security and terms of the agreement. His report was expected to take 30 days.

A condition of the compromise was the calling off of a strike of around 4,000 unionized government and power corporation workers. Union president Todd Parsons had delivered notice of a full and general strike across the territory ahead of the February mediation dates.

MyYellowknifeNow has asked the UNW to comment on the scheduled training, a response hasn’t yet been received.

Both the union and the government are on a media blackout until Ready’s recommendations are released and neither has made comments to local media outlets since news of the compromise was announced.
