NTPC appoints new President and CEO

The Northwest Territories Power Coorporation has announced the appointment of a new President and CEO. Starting April 1st, the new President and CEO of NTPC will be Noel Voykin.

Voykin has experience in positions within the Canadian Armed Forces, SaskPower and TransAlta Utilities. According to NTPC Volkin brings considerable experience from both the domestic and international mining and electrical utilities industries including experience in both the public and private sectors.

“Mr. Voykin has experience in the areas of corporate development, major projects, sales, and research
and development. Most recently, he was an engineering executive within Cameco Corporation; where he oversaw the technical aspects of all of Cameco’s worldwide operations.”

Voykin graduated with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. Minister Robert C. McLeod made the announcement on Thursday, February 21st. He says the people of the Northwest Territories rely on the NWT Power Corporation togenerate, transmit and distribute clean, reliable and affordable energy.

“I look forward to working with Mr. Voykin as the Corporation continues to provide the power that fuels the growth of our territory and its economy, and supports sustainable communities.”

The announcement comes after NTPC’s previous President, Jay Grewal accepted a position as Manitoba Hydro’s new president and chief executive, effective February 2019.

Inuit Nunangat University to begin regional knowledge centre site selection

Following the selection of Arviat, Nunavut, as the site of Inuit Nunangat University’s main campus, the process to choose regional knowledge centres and satellite campuses across Inuit Nunangat is underway. Search continues for ways to deal with 200,000 tons of arsenic dust at Giant Mine

Scientists presented projects for a more permanent solution to hundreds of thousands of tons arsenic dust from the mine. One method uses local beer to fuel a transformation of the toxic dust, while another tries to turn it into glass. Another proposed method looks at turning the dust into a highly sought commodity known as metallic arsenic. Additional proposals look whether robotic technology could allow crews to virtually pilot the extraction of the dust while “sipping coffee” from a distance.
