Mayhem and terror coming to Yellowknife’s big screen

40 new films are set to premiere at the 7th annual Dead North Film Festival later this month. The genre filmmaking festival will be showcasing new, original Northern short films at the Capitol Theatre in Yellowknife.

Filmmakers from NWT and Yukon spent the darkest, coldest weeks of winter scripting, shooting and editing their own original films (horror, sci-fi and fantasy) and these films will make their way to the big screen at the Dead North Film Festival from February 28th to March 3rd.

Festival co-founder Jay Bulckaert says that Dead North is designed to challenge the Northern film community to create bold and visionary films in the dead and dark of winter

“Since its inception, over 170 films by amateur and veteran filmmakers have been brought successfully to the screen.”

The films will be divided over the three nights of regular screenings and the entire program will be showcased again during two Sunday afternoon super-screenings, where viewers can watch all 40 films. The regular screenings will take place at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and the two super screenings will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Additionally, Dead North will feature a number of workshops, along with the Saturday night awards party, where the winning films will be handed their Zombear trophies. The festival will also be attempting to live stream the awards ceremony so that fans and filmmakers from remote Northern communities can watch in real time.

There will also be photography stream which will be on display at the new Dead North Curiosity shop located at the Champagne Room (202 5006 Franklin Ave) where you can vote for your favourite photo.
