PM has strong words for Venezuela “Dictatorship”; Gruesome details in McArthur case heard

PM blasts Nicolas Maduro

Canada will provide more humanitarian relief for countries suffering under a Venezuelan refugee crisis.  CTV reports that’s what two government sources said this morning.  An official announcement is expected today as Canada meets with its Lima partners to discuss the crisis in Venezuela.  Ahead of the meeting Prime Minister Trudeau said the president of Venezuela has shown a disregard for the rule of law and human rights.

Courtroom warned details will be “graphic”

In a rare move the Crown warned the courtroom that details in the Bruce McArthur case would be graphic.  The multiple-day sentencing hearing began this morning.  Ahead of reading the agreed statement of facts the Crown warned the details may affect the health and well-being of the people in the courtroom, including their ability to eat and sleep.  McArthur pleaded guilty to murdering eight men last week.

Happy Birthday Facebook

For some of us it is hard to believe that Facebook turns 15 today.  Despite what is perceived as users signing off of the social media power house, the latest earnings show a 12-percent gain.  The site went live on this day in 2004.

Yellowknife councillors consider request to endorse a new federal election format

At a presentation to city council on Wednesday, Jeremy Flatt requested that the city endorse a resolution calling for a proportional representation model for federal elections. If city coucnillors decide to support the request, Yellowknife could become the first city in Canada to endorse the alternative federal voting system. Flatt said that some have called it a “more democratic” system.

Yellowknife’s Leah McShane shines bright as Loran 2026 Scholar

Leah McShane, a Yellowknife high school student, was just named a Loran Scholar for 2026, out of more than 5,400 applicants across the country. The student from École Sir John Franklin High School made it through four selection rounds to receive the award. “With a little bit of work you can do anything you set your mind to,” said McShane, who hopes she can inspire more youth to follow their dreams.

Indigenous languages pilot program to launch at NWT Legislative Assembly

A new pilot program will connect fluent Indigenous languages speakers to interpreter roles at the N.W.T Legislative  Assembly. The pilot program will run from May 2026 to March 2027, with one applicant selected for each of the N.W.T.’s official Indigenous languages: Dene Kǝdǝ́ (North Slavey), Dëne Sųłıné (Chipewyan), Dene Zhatıé (South Slavey), Dinjii Zhuʼ Ginjik (Gwich’in), Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun andTłı̨chǫ.

GNWT reminds residents not to dump trash on public land

The Government of the Northwest Territories is reminding residents that dumping garbage, appliances, or construction materials on public land is harmful to the environment and to wildlife and is illegal under territorial legislation.
