First Air to add flights between Yellowknife and Edmonton

You’ll be getting more flight options to and from Edmonton this summer.

Ottawa-based First Air is adding three new flights each week between Edmonton and Yellowknife starting June 1.

Currently flying six times a week between the two cities, the airline will add Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday flights for a total of nine flights per week.

“We are very pleased to increase our presence in the West and expand our operations with additional flights between these two cities,” said Dr. Brock Friesen, president and CEO of First Air.

The airline says capacity is being added on peak travel days to accommodate demands. First Air plans to use Boeing 737s to service the new flights.

“Those are seen as the peak travel days between Edmonton and Yellowknife,” First Air spokesperson Anubha Momin told Moose FM.

“It’s really a supply and demand issue. It looked like people needed more of those flights between the cities so we saw enough demand to add capacity and offer the additional seats and cargo space for our customers.”

First Air has been flying the Edmonton to Yellowknife route since 1997, after taking it over from NWT Air, a company acquired by First Air that same year.
