Dettah-Yellowknife ice road opening Friday morning

The ice road between Dettah and Yellowknife will be ready for use as of 11 a.m. Friday, January 11th for all vehicles weighing up to 5,000 kilograms.

The Department of Infrastructure said on Thursday that all measurements recorded indicated that the thickness of the ice is at least 35 centimetres, the requirement to proceed with construction.

This is the latest that the ice road has opened since the year 2000 when it also opened on the 11th.

It is illegal to drive on the ice road until it is open as the fine for doing so is $863.

Reports show child poverty on rise and families living in “deeper poverty”

A new report on child poverty showed that on average single parents in the N.W.T. need about $20,000 more per year to reach the poverty threshold. They also found number of children living in poverty in Canada doubled between 2019 to 2023.
