Yellowknife doctor receives Order of Canada in Ottawa

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknife Doctor Ewan Affleck is getting the Order of Canada from the Governor General at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Wednesday.

That’s one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

Practising in Canada’s North for over 20 years, Doctor Affleck has worked to improve the delivery of health services in remote areas through the pioneering use of electronic medical records.

We spoke to Affleck when he was announced as an Order recipient.

“I started my career in Nunavik, Quebec as one of the two physicians to be placed permanently in a remote community and that’s where I started almost 25 year ago. I’ve spent my entire career working in small communities before coming to Yellowknife 12 years ago.”

In addition, Doctor Affleck is an ultra-marathoner who worked as a physician at the 2008 Arctic Winter Games and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Also honoured Wednesday, rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins.
