NWT hamlet election results

It was a busy election day for the hamlets of Northwest Territories. Nine communities saw their councils official through an election or acclamation.  Sachs Harbour, Fort McPherson, Fort Resolution, Fort Providence, Enterprise, Paulatuk, Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, and Ulukhaktok will all experience a new council.

In Fort Providence, Danny Beaulieu was elected mayor over his three competitors, including current mayor Samuel Gargan. Ronald Bonnetrouge, Linda Croft, James Ben Bonnetrouge, and Shirley Gargan make up the four council positions. Ten candidates ran for the four council seats.

In Fort Resolution, two of the three council positions saw a council member re-elected. Councillors Brandie Miersch and Angela McKay were re-elected to their seats and will be joined by new council member Elizabeth Ann McKay.

Enterprise has a less exciting day yesterday as their results was already known to them. All four council positions were acclaimed. Barbara Louise Hart, Daniel Jordan Harley, Craig McMaster and Bruce Proud round out the council seats.

Outside the greater Yellowknife area, Fort McPherson has elected William Koe as their new mayor. Mayor Ray Ruben Sr. of Paulatuk was re-elected. Mayor Floyd Lennie was also re-elected for Sachs Harbour. Ulukhaktok will see their mayor return as they have re-elected Mayor Laverna Klengenberg.

GNWT apologizes for 2022 raid of Lutselk’e cultural camp

GNWT issued an apology on behalf of the territorial government to the Lutselk'e Dene First Nation for a raid at a camp at Artillery Lake back in 2022. Simpson said that a review of the conduct of wildlife officers is ongoing. Four years ago, the community was subject to what Elders and community members described as a "traumatic" raid by wildlife officers for allegedly harvesting caribou considered off limits in the zone. The search warrant was later deemed unlawful in N.W.T.’s superior court.

Feds, GNWT say affordable, accessible housing in works for Northerners

Inuvik’s Blueberry patch will be the site of much needed affordable and accessible housing units. Plans for the new social housing development include 40 units. Monique M. LaPlante, with Canada Mortgage and Housing, reported that the common areas will be barrier free, and 35 per cent of units will be accessible. Minister Rebecca Alty and Minister Lucy Kuptana reported the new housing project was launched as part of a $19 million collaboration between the federal and territorial government.
