City of Yellowknife honours fallen firefighters on Tuesday

A service on Tuesday will remember two fallen Yellowknife firefighters, 10 years after their deaths.

Cyril Fyfe, who was 41, and 24-year-old Kevin Olson died in 2005 while fighting a fire in the saw shed of the Home Building Centre on Old Airport Road.

Four firefighters on the building’s roof survived when it collapsed – but Fyfe and Olson, who had been inside at the time, were killed. An improperly installed space heater was to blame for the fire.

Fyfe had served for nearly 18 years with the Yellowknife Fire Division. Olson, by contrast, had not completed his second week on the job.

A public ceremony to remember them will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, March 17 at Lakeview Cemetery, while flags at city facilities will be lowered for the day.
