Downtown Yellowknife to dim lights

Downtown Yellowknife will go dark Tuesday. It’s part of the city’s efforts to reduce light pollution.

It is taking part in a nation-wide challenge called the Smart Cities Challenge Extraordinary Skies Event. The City has teamed up with Ecology North and Northlands Utilities to find innovative ways to address local issues. Yellowknife is one of five finalists in the $5 million category.

A big part of the city’s proposal for the challenge is to make its street lighting more sustainable. If it wins, technology will be used to make the lamp posts more environmentally friendly. That would include dimmers.

Doors to the Yellowknife Visitor Centre at City Hall open on November 20th at 5 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. At 5:20 p.m. lights on Somba k’e Civic Plaza and on the outside of City Hall will be dimmed for a short demonstration in the dark.
