Yellowknife will be getting a polytechnic university. On October 26th, 2018 Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Caroline Cochrane released the territorial government’s response to the Aurora College Foundational Review Report. The government has decided to turn Aurora College into a polytechnic university. The government says the transformation of the college is so they can better meet the needs of residents of the Northwest Territories.

A polytechnic university combines the practical approach of a college education with the depth of study associated with a university program. Polytechnic programs focus on hands’-on skills and are technology-based, ensuring graduates are prepared for the current job market.

The university will be building on the existing Aurora College. The GNWT has determined that this is the most efficient, effective and practical path towards proving more quality post-secondary education and training in the North.

The next step for the government is the hiring of an Associate Deputy Minister of Postsecondary Education Renewal and the development of a vision for postsecondary education in the NWT.
