Auditor General: CanNor not properly monitoring funding

Canada’s Auditor General says The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency — or CanNor — is not properly monitoring the funding it gives out.

At a news conference in Ottawa this morning – Michael Ferguson also said CANOR does not know if the funding it provides is even helping economic development in the North.

Ferguson found only three out of 11 projects granted money under its Community Economic Development Program were adequately assessed.

In another case — funding for a project was approved before an application was even received.

The auditor also found that by August 2013 — CanNor had more employees in its Ottawa office than at headquarters in Iqaluit.

CanNor was established in 2009 as a way to promote economic development in all three territories.

Nunavut M-P and former Yellowknife resident Leona Agluukaq is the minister in charge of the agency.
