Military exercise coming to Yellowknife

A major air disaster exercise will be coming to Yellowknife next week.

The exercise named READY SOTERIA as part of Operation NANOOK 2018 will be happening in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories between September 17 and 22.

According to a media release from the Department of National Defence, Operation NANOOK has taken place yearly since 2007 and consisted of one or two major activities during August and September.

“This year, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has amalgamated some northern operations that form separate deployments throughout the year, allowing CAF to work more effectively with other government departments and partner agencies. A more persistent presence in the North through Op NANOOK will enhance surveillance and control of the Arctic region.”

Next week, residents may see increased ground and air traffic, as well as parachutists around the Yellowknife Airport and along the Ingraham Trail/Dettah Road.

Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to local residents. The Canadian Armed Forces strive to maintain good environmental stewardship and plans its operations so that there is minimal impact to the environment.
