Staff shortage leads to swimming lesson cuts

A lack of staff has led to the cancellation of some classes at the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool. The City of Yellowknife says it doesn’t have enough employees to continue with the same programs as last year, and encourages residents to get on waitlists.

“Once staff resources are replenished, more classes will be created and those on the waitlist will be contacted first for registration,” says a release issued by Program Manager Brian Kelln. “We apologize for the reduced access and are taking these measures for the safety of swimmers.”

Kelln adds that the city is working to recruit enough qualified staff to return to regular service levels. Exactly which classes have been cancelled has not been released, but the Recreation Guide on the city’s website is considered current.

The pool’s hours were also adjusted at the end of July to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
