Territorial coroner’s services, RCMP investigating after caribou hunter found dead
A 40-year old Fort McPherson resident was found dead near km 465 of the Dempster Highway on Sunday morning according to a media release from the Yukon Coroner’s Service today.
Kilometre 465 of the highway marks the boundary between Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories.
The night before, Fort McPherson RCMP got a report about an overdue hunter who had been hunting caribou on the Yukon side of the NWT/Yukon border.
The weather had gone from rain to snow, to blizzard conditions leaving about 20-25 centimetres of snow on the ground.
A search party worked through the night and the hunter was found dead around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service, with the assistance of Fort McPherson RCMP and the Northwest Territories’ Coroner Service, are investigating the death. Â
