BEFORE THE BELL: B.C. Pot Producer Market Value Flying High

After reaching new highs this week, shares in cannabis producers Canopy Growth, Aurora Cannabis and Aphria fell between two and almost seven-percent yesterday.  That fall, coupled with the financial sector, weighed down Bay Street with the TSX losing 88 points to finish at 16,355.

But one company that is riding the wave is B.C. based pot producer Tilray.  Despite reporting $12-million in losses and only $10-million in sales, the market value of the company is almost $5-billion dollars and the stock is up 19-percent in pre-market trade.

On Wall Street the S&P and the Nasdaq both closed at record highs after news of a U.S. trade deal with Mexico buoyed investors.  Today all eyes will be on the tech sector.

This morning oil is up $0.37 cents to $68.90 a barrel.  Gold is down $4.80 dollars to $1,209 an ounce and the loonie gave back a little bit after a two month high yesterday it’s down a tenth of a cent to  $0.7727 cents U.S.

Water testing at another Yellowknife school confirms elevated lead and copper

Testing at another school site in the city of Yellowknife showed elevated levels of lead and copper in water present in some of its drinking taps. Earlier this month, testing showed four other school buildings in Yellowknife and a school in Behchokǫ̀ had elevated levels of both copper and lead in water. Since comprehensive testing of schools across the territory began this fall, 28 school sites out of 34 announced to date have tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

Fort Smith officials said water testing at municipal buildings has confirmed the presence of lead. According to the announcement, water samples at the Town Hall, the Fire Hall, and the Municipal Services Building continue to show elevated levels of lead.

City wants public input on plans to expand raw water supply in Yellowknife

City of Yellowknife
City officials are looking for the public’s input on a project that aims to expand Yellowknife’s raw water supply. According to the message from city officials, the project will “modernize and expand” the water system. By expanding the system, city officials also want to expand the reliability of the long term water supply. With water infrastructure aging, an adequate water supply will be critical as the city grows.

GNWT closes Mackenzie Valley Winter Road for season

GNWT's Infrastructure department says the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road is closed for the winter season. The Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads remain restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am. A representative with GNWT’s department of Infrastructure said access to winter roads and sections are limited to timed travel to preserve their longevity at the end of the winter road season.
