Fall Harvest Fair to be held at Wiiliideh site to “bring communities together”

The 10th annual Fall Harvest Fair is happening this weekend.

This is the fifth year  Ecology North and Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN) have coordinated the event, and this year it will be held at the YKDFN Wiiliideh site on the Yellowknife River for the first time.

“When they first started coordinating the event it was to be hosted in Ndilo, where they have a community garden and greenhouse and there was always the hope that maybe one year we could host the fair in Dettah, to kind of bring all the communities together,” says Molly Stollmeyer from Ecology North.

“So the significance is this year, as opposed to having it in either Ndilo or Dettah, hosting it at the Wiiliideh site along the Yellowknife River is kind of like a common ground to be inclusive of all the different communities.”

Ndilo has been hosting the fair for a few years but Dettah just recently built a greenhouse through their Dechita Nawao program, she says.

“So at the Fall Harvest Fair along the Yellowknife River this year we’re going to do a new mural that will go at the Dettah greenhouse as well. So in a lot of ways we’re bringing these three communities together on one common site.”

There will be a few new things to look forward to this year she says, in addition to the usual harvest-related activities and workshops.

“One new item this year is that we’re the tastiest pie as one of the categories for the show-off,” Stollmeyer says.

“Not only is this encouraging more people to harvest but maybe helping people deal with berries that are growing uncontrollably that they can’t deal with and they’ll get an opportunity to win a prize and be celebrated and also share some pie.”

The fair runs from 1 to 6 p.m. this Saturday.
