Bears spotted in Hay River and Yellowknife

Black bears have been spotted in Hay River and Yellowknife in the last week.

One bear in Hay River was destroyed by a wildlife officer.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR), human encounters with bears are becoming a bigger problem in the territory during the spring and summer.

“As the human population expands, and as industrial development causes allows for more widespread penetration into bear country, conflicts between humans and bears will increase,” ENR’s bear safety page states.

ENR advises that you not feed wildlife in the Northwest Territories and follow bear safety precautions.

For more information about bear safety, check out ENR’s brochure, Safety in Grizzly and Black Bear Country.
