Strike threat ends as AVENS staff accept new contracts

Workers at AVENS, the NWT seniors’ housing and care organization, have accepted new contracts offered by management after threatening strike action.

Last week, the Union of Northern Workers had said 96% of workers supported a strike mandate. A strike was threatened from March 27 onwards.

However, after two days of conciliation talks, the union said a “tentative agreement” had been reached.

Now, union members have ratified the new agreement and accepted terms which include a salary increase, improvements to maternity leave conditions, and a “letter of understanding” intended to forbid the contracting out of services.

The union previously said talks between AVENS and its 100 employees had broken down in early December, after more than a year of negotiations.

AVENS, which operates four facilities in Yellowknife, has not commented.
