Artists holding “sidewalk” meetings on transformer box designs

The City of Yellowknife is continuing a public art initiative to have transformer boxes decorated by local artists, for the third consecutive year.

“Our partnership with Northland Utilities provides a great opportunity to support local artists and to turn the green boxes into colourful pieces of art,” says Yellowknife Mayor Mark Heyck.

This year fifteen artists will resurface fourteen transformer boxes with their designs. One of the boxes is being resurfaced by a team of two who applied together.

Artists will be hosting a “sidewalk” meeting at the transformer locations to give residents an opportunity to be a part of the creative process and have some influence on the final design of the artwork.

Residents who want to provide their feedback on the transformer box designs can meet at the various locations at 11 a.m. this Sunday, July 15. A list of participating artists and locations is available on the city’s website, and a map of the locations will be available at the city’s booth at the Farmers Market and city facilities.

At the end of this season, a total of 27 transformer and traffic light control boxes will be decorated.
