The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) have chosen a mediator to help them negotiate a new collective agreement.
Mr. Mort Mitchnick, a mediator with over 30 years of experience, has been chosen to assist the NTPC and the UNW as they attempt to conclude a new collective agreement.
The NTPC and the UNW have been negotiating a new collective agreement since the last one expired at the end of 2014.
After multiple rounds of negotiations, an agreement was reached on a number of items. Although the UNW has not served NTPC with notice of mediation under the Public Service Act for the outstanding issues, the parties agreed to proceed with identifying a mediator and determining dates.
“NTPC is optimistic that a negotiated agreement can be reached with the UNW. Mr. Mitchnick is a well-respected mediator who has served as a private arbitrator and mediator, as well as a statutory adjudicator and mediator,” says Jay Grewal, President and CEO of NTPC.
“He served for a number of years on the standing panel of arbitrators in a wide variety of industries, including Major League Baseball, power generation, the steel and airline industries, and the community college, university and municipal sectors. We look forward to working with him and the UNW to reach an agreement during this period of challenging economic times. We also remain prepared to return to the bargaining table prior to the start of mediation should the UNW wish to continue working towards a resolution,” Grewal says.
NTPC is a wholly owned subsidiary of NT Hydro, which in turn is 100 percent owned by the Government of the Northwest Territories.
Mediation dates have been scheduled with Mr. Mitchnick for November 14 – 16 in Yellowknife
