RCMP won’t rule out third party in Yellowknife homicide, assault

Police in Yellowknife say the possibility of a third party in a December incident that left one man dead and another seriously injured isn’t being ruled out.

On December 14, police responded to a report of two unconscious men in the Sunridge Place apartments.

Upon arrival, RCMP realized that both men were seriously injured.

John Wifladt, 39, of Yellowknife later died of his injuries while a second man, Colin Digness survived but with serious injuries.

RCMP say a third party could be responsible for the homicide and assault, however, no suspect has been identified at this time.

Police say they will maintain the integrity of the investigation but keep the public informed as much as possible.

“We are looking for the public’s assistance in this very serious incident,” said Northwest Territories RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Sgt. Eric Lane.

“This incident left one person dead, which remains an unsolved homicide. It also left a victim who sustained serious injuries, which is always of great concern.

“Anyone that has information is encouraged to come forward so that we may give the families, and the community, some closure on the events of December 14, 2014.”

Following John Wifladt’s death, his brother – Tommy – suggested some form of sword fight may have taken place.

Digness, 41, says that did not happen, but admits two swords he kept in his apartment are missing. He does not know who took them.

He believes an attacker burst through his apartment door while the two men were inside, hitting Digness on the head before attacking Wifladt. But he emphasizes his recall of the incident is dim at best because the two had been drinking.

Police continue to investigate.
